Chapter Six
Marcus woke the next morning with a growling stomach. He sniffed the air and smelt fried eggs. He smiled and opened his eyes.
Runt had left the cocoon of blankets some time during the night. Marcus searched the dimly lit cave for him. When he found him, he couldn't hide his shock.
"What's the matter?" Runt asked. Marcus heard Runt's voice in his head, but he didn't see his lips move. What was he thinking? Runt didn't have lips any more. He had fangs and scales and large wings protruding from his back. The blond man had vanished and the crimson dragon had taken his place.
"I… you're…" Marcus waved his hand at Runt.
The dragon inclined his head in a very Runt-like gesture. "What?"
"You're a dragon," Marcus said.
"You mean you're seeing me as a dragon?"
"Yes. What happened? What did you do?"
"Nothing. At least I don't think so. I told you. I don't know how to project one form or another. All of my kind appears only as dragons until we reach puberty, when we're taught how to appear as human. By that time, I'd already been taken prisoner by the witch. There wasn't anyone to teach me what to do."
Marcus could hear Runt getting distressed and he steeled himself to approach the dragon, telling himself it was only Runt. Runt would never hurt him. He loved him. They had made love just a few hours ago. This was just Runt's other form he could see.
With a hand that shook a little, Marcus touched the scales of Runt's front leg. They were surprisingly soft and warm. He stroked his hand along the limb, realising he would have been touching his arm if Runt were in human form. When he reached the clawed paw, he carefully entwined his fingers with the claws and raised it to his lips.
He thought he heard a sniffle coming from Runt, but in his dragon form, it was too hard to tell for sure.
"Now isn't this touching?"
Marcus jumped at the sound of a voice from the entrance of the cave. The haggard silhouette looked nothing like the beautiful woman he had left in the tower, but he knew this was the witch in her true form.
She stepped closer to the fire. Her face had turned green and was covered in warts. When she pushed her grey hair from her eyes, Marcus could see her fingernails were black. Her grin showed crooked yellow teeth beneath a hooked nose.
"You stole my dragon from me," the witch said as she pointed a gnarled finger at Runt. "I've come to take him home."
Marcus stepped in front of Runt and reached down for his sword. Too late he remembered he was naked and that he had left his sword on the other side of the fire with the rest of his belongings.
"Runt isn't your possession," he said. "I'm going to take him back to his family and you aren't going to stop me."
The witch cackled. "His family won't want him back. He's damaged goods."
"Don't talk about him that way.
